“Grab a bite to eat.”

Of course, in English we can use more formal English and say, “I want to go to a restaurant” or “I’m hungry, let’s eat some food.” However, when I’m with my friends I usually use casual and more natural expressions. For example, when I’m out with my friends I often ask them “(Do you) want to grab a bite to eat?” It means exactly the same - “Would you like to get something to eat?” However, when we say it doesn’t always mean a large “grab a bite” meal. It could be just a sandwich, snack or smaller dishes. Also, it’s usually used when we are suddenly a little hungry, without making a plan to eat. It’s very informal, but also a really common expression. I often say it when I’m passing a convenience store! For example, when I’m walking along the street I often say to my friend “Wait a minute, I’m going to go into Lawson quickly to grab a bite to eat. Do you want anything?!” My friend understands that I don’t need a lot of food, just that I’m feeling a little hungry right now!

でも、普段友人といる時は、もっとカジュアルで自然な表現を使います。

例えば友人との外出先ではよくこの様に聞きます。

“(Do you) want to grab a bite to eat?”

（軽く何か食べない？）

これは、

“Would you like to get something to eat?”

と同じ意味ですが、“grab a bite”と言う時は、サンドウィッチやスナックなどの軽食を意味します。食事をするつもりではなかったのに、急にお腹が空いてしまった時にも使う、とても一般的な表現です。

私はコンビニに立ち寄る時によくこの表現を使います！例えば、友達と道を歩いている時に、

「ちょっと待ってて、急いでローソンに行って軽く食べるよ。何か欲しいものある？」

これで友人は、私は今ちょっと小腹が空いていて、そんなに沢山の食べ物は必要ないんだと理解できるのです。

In English, we often say “That's music to my ears!” We say this when we hear good news, usually that directly benefits us. It means we are very happy to hear the new information. For example, last month my friend Jo asked me if I could help him to move house. You see, I drive a car here in Fukuoka, but I think Jo doesn’t know anyone else with a car! He was a little worried because he doesn’t have a driver’s licence and therefore cannot rent a car. He has a lot of stuff, including some heavy furniture, so he didn’t think he could move apartments by himself. When I gave Jo the good news and told him I had some free time on the weekend and that I could help him move apartments with my car, he was very pleased. He said, “Ross, that is music to my ears! I don’t know what I would have done otherwise.”

So the next time you hear great news, or a friend offers you help that makes your life a little better or easier, you can use this expression to let them know what a difference their help makes.

Many Kensington students use English at work, to communicate with clients all over the world. We may not be meeting each other in person, but it’s still nice to send a short message to wish them well at this time of year. So how do you say Happy Holidays in a business email?

Well, simple greetings like, “Season's Greetings” or “Happy Holidays" is appropriate. You can also add “I hope the season is treating you well. I wanted to thank you for your business this year and wish you and your team a Happy New Year.”

Remember, you don’t need to write a lot or go into great detail. A short message is fine and will be appreciated. If you are writing to your boss or other team members, here are a few extra phrases you can steal:

“Thank you for all your hard work and dedication this year.”

“Thank you for inspiring me to do my best every day.”

“Wishing a wonderful Christmas to a wonderful mentor!”

“Our team wouldn't be the same without you.”

“Thank you for another outstanding year!”

シンプルな挨拶なら、Season's Greetings（季節のご挨拶）、Happy Holidays（良い休暇をお過ごし下さい）が適切です。

I hope the season is treating you well. I wanted to thank you for your business this year and wish you and your team a Happy New Year.

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介 エディンバラでの年越し

As many of you know, my hometown is Edinburgh - and it’s really famous for its New Year celebrations. We actually call new year “Hogmanay” in Scotland. On December 31st, there is a big street party in the main street in the city. The roads are closed and the street is just filled with people. There are bands playing loud music on the stages and it’s so packed it’s hard to move. Of course, it’s very cold in Scotland at the end of the year. Everyone is usually freezing, and wearing a really big winter jacket, hat, scarf and gloves! However, this doesn’t stop people from celebrating. At midnight we have a big countdown from 10 to 1 - everyone joins in! On the stroke of midnight, we can enjoy one of the biggest fireworks displays in the world from Edinburgh Castle. Then everyone hugs and kisses each other - friends, family and strangers too - and shouts “HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!” After the fireworks, everyone heads inside to the pub. We sing Auld Lang Syne and raise a glass to welcome the new year.

If you ever have the chance to visit Scotland, and can bear the cold weather, I definitely recommend going there for New Year - it’s a party like no other!

多くの方がご存知の通り、私の出身地はエディンバラです。そしてエディンバラは新年のお祝いがとても有名です。実は、スコットランドでは、新年のことを「Hogmanay」と呼んでいます。

12月31日には、街のメイン通りでは大きなストリートパーティーが開催されます。道路では車は通行止めになり、人々で溢れます。ステージではバンドが大きな音で演奏し、ぎゅうぎゅうに混雑して動けないほどです。もちろん、年末のスコットランドはとても寒いです。人々は皆寒さで凍えていて、とて大きな冬用のジャケットを着て、帽子、マフラー、手袋をしています。でも、そんな凍えるほどの寒さですら、人々が新年を祝うのを止めることはできません。深夜には、皆が参加して、10秒前からカウントダウンします！時計の針がちょうど深夜0時を告げると、世界でも最大規模の大きさであるエディンバラ城からの花火を楽しめるのです。

それから人々は友達や家族、見知らぬ人ともハグやキスをして「ハッピーニューイヤー!!!」と叫びます。

花火が終わると人々はパブへ向かいます。私達はAuld Lang Syne(蛍の光)を歌い、グラスを掲げて新年を迎えます。

もしあなたがスコットランドを訪れる機会があって、寒い気候に耐えられるなら、新年に行ってみることを強くお勧めします、その他のパーティーとは全く違うものですよ！

“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

These two phrases are used a lot in December! Everyone wishes each other well for the holiday period at the end of the year. In the UK, most people greet each other with “Merry Christmas” on Christmas Day. Even strangers passing in the street, or staff talking to customers in shops, will use this phrase. However, in America, did you know that most people don’t say this, and actually usually say “Happy Holidays”? You see, Christmas is a Christian holiday. However, America has a wide range of nationalities and religions - most US citizens aren’t Christian and don’t celebrate Christian traditions. Therefore, in the US and Canada, most people wish each other “Happy Holidays” - because this phrase is much more inclusive. It includes everyone, no matter what nationality or religion people are. Of course, it also includes all the people who don’t associate with any religion too. So, if you are spending any time over in the States at Christmas and New Year, remember to wish everyone “Happy Holidays!”

しかしながらアメリカでは、ほとんどの人がこのフレーズを言わず、実際には「ハッピーホリデー」と言うのを知っていますか？見ての通り、クリスマスとはキリスト教の祝日です。しかしアメリカには幅広い国籍と宗教が存在していて、多くの人々はキリスト教徒ではなく、キリスト教の伝統をお祝いしません。そのためアメリカやカナダでは多くの人々がお互いの「ハッピーホリデー」を願うのです。

このフレーズはより包括的で、国籍や宗教に関わらず全ての人々に使えます。もちろんどんな宗教にも属さない人も。

もしあなたがクリスマスや年越しをアメリカで過ごす時には皆の「ハッピーホリデー」を願うことを覚えておいて下さいね！

私の出身地、私自身～ロス講師の自己紹介 - スコティッシュキルトについて

Many Scottish men own a tartan kilt - it’s a type of skirt, but only for men. We wear it on special occasions, such as weddings. You don’t need to be the groom to wear a kilt, in fact usually all men at a Scottish wedding wear kilts. I think kilts look quite fashionable, and very traditional. They are often different shades of green: usually dull colours, but you can also find more modern styles with brighter colours. I own a kilt and mine is more of a modern style. It has the traditional tartan check pattern, but it has some bright yellow and red lines mixed in with the green. Although they look great, sometimes they can be quite uncomfortable and impractical to wear! For example, they are quite heavy, and if it rains (it always rains in Scotland!) and your kilt gets wet, it gets even heavier and takes a long time to dry. Also, wearing a kilt in Scottish winter is absolutely freezing! In general though, I love wearing my kilt at weddings, and it’s great fun to see everyone doing traditional Scottish dancing while wearing their kilts.

多くのスコットランド人の男性は自分のタータンキルト (一種のスカートですが、男性専用です)を持っています。私達はそれを、例えば結婚式などの特別な時に着ます。あなたが花婿さんになる時にはキルトを着用する必要はないのですが、実際には、通常スコットランドの結婚式では全ての男性がキルトを着ています。キルトはすごくおしゃれに見えますし、とても伝統的だと思います。キルトは様々な色合いの通常はくすんだグリーンですが、現代的なスタイルの明るい色の物も見ることができます。私も自分のキルトを持っていて、それはとても現代的なスタイルのものです。それは伝統的なタータンチェック柄ですが、明るい黄色と赤のラインがグリーンのラインにミックスされています。見た目は素晴らしいキルトですが、実は時々、着用していて全く快適でないこともありますし、実用的ではないのです！例えば、キルトはとても重いのですが、もし雨が降って（実際スコットランドはいつも雨です！）あなたのキルトが濡れてしまったらさらに重くなって、乾かすのはとても時間がかかります。それに、スコットランドで冬にキルトを着ると、凍えるほど寒いです！通常は私は結婚式でキルトを着用するのが好きです。キルトを着た人々が伝統的なスコティッシュダンスを踊るのを見るのはとても楽しいです。

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

In English we say “A picture is worth a thousand words.” This means that difficult or complex ideas can often easily be shown with just one picture. We hope each photo we share helps to brainstorm lots of ideas to talk about. Pictures help us to talk about many small details we often overlook or forget. Also, they help others to get a good feeling of a person, possession or place.

When I see a new photo, I also want to know about all the things I can’t see in a photo! For example, I often want to ask about whatever happened before or after the photo was taken. I want to know the background of the people in the photos, and why they are doing what they are doing. What’s missing? Why is it not there? Is this normal? How did the people in the photo feel at that time? Sometimes the picture can answer all these questions, and sometimes we need another thousand words to discuss everything! Either way, photos are great conversation starters, and a great tool to improve our English language skills.

私は新しい写真を見ると、写真を見ただけではわからないことまで知りたくなります！その写真を撮る前後に何が起こったのか、時々聞いてみたくなります。その写真に写っている人々のバックグラウンドについてや、彼らがやっていることの理由を知りたいと思うのです。何を失ったのか？なぜそこに無いのか？それは普通のことなのか？この写真の人々はその時どんな気持ちだったのか？

写真の中に答えを見つける時もありますし、何千もの言葉を使って話し合わなければいけない時もあります。どちらにしても、写真はすばらしい会話のきっかけであり、英語のスキルを上達させる素晴らしいツールなのです。
